The Nicaragua Yoga & Surf Retreat begins Saturday, March 5, 2016 and ends Saturday March 12, 2016.
2. What’s included in the retreat pricing?
7 nights accommodation, all meals at Costa Dulce Beach Bungalows and Laguna de Apoyo, fresh juices, local rum and beer, 1 surf lesson, board rentals, twice daily yoga sessions, one 60 minute massage per guest, a day-trip to Laguna de Apoyo, a day-trip to Playa Remanso and transportation to and from Augusto Sandino International Airport (MGA) in Managua to Costa Dulce Beach Bungalows.
3. Is airfare included?
Airfare is not included. You are in charge of booking your own transportation to and from Nicaragua. I will conduct regular flight searches and when I find flight deals I will send them out in the Ambuja Yoga newsletter or post to the Private Facebook Group.
4. Where is San Juan del Sur?
San Juan del Sur is located on the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua in the far southwest corner of the country. Costa Dulce Beach Bungalows (our accommodation for the week) is located on Playa Escameca, less than 20 km from San Juan del Sur and approximately 2 1/2 hrs from Managua.
5. What type of yoga is taught?
I, Autumn Adams, is a certified Hatha Yoga Instructor registered with Yoga Alliance. Autumn blends her knowledge of hatha, vinyasa and yin yoga to create dynamic classes appropriate for all levels of yoga practitioners. Each morning we will begin with an energizing all-levels vinyasa flow; afternoon sessions will be either a restorative flow class or a workshop depending on the day’s activities. Each yoga class will be 1.5-2 hours long and will include asana, pranayama, and meditation.
6. I’m new to yoga and I don’t know how to surf. Is this retreat appropriate for me?
Absolutely! And we’d love to have you. During yoga classes I will always offer modifications and variations to make asanas more accessible or more challenging. And for non-surfers, we will have a surf guide available to offer lessons and pointers throughout the week. Private surf lessons begin at $30/hr. One group surf lesson is included in the pricing. I will also be available for private yoga lessons which are $45/60-75 minutes. Private yoga lessons are a great way to move deeper into your yoga practice, increase strength and flexibility, improve alignment and get hands-on one-on-one instruction. If you and your hubby/friend would like to share a private lesson it’s $45 for the first person and an additional $15 for each additional person (ex. 2 people = $60, 3 people = $75).
7. Where will we be surfing?
The house break at Playa Escameca is a great beginning to intermediate surfing spot, but more advanced surfers will also find it suitable. Depending on the group’s level of experience we will be able to walk to Playa Yankee (15 minutes or so) where the swell really gets kicking. We will also spend one afternoon at Playa Remanso. Want to check out another beach? No problem. We can help you arrange a shuttle to Hermosa, Remanso, Marsella, or Maderas (additional fees apply).
8. Can I bring my own surfboard?
Yes, of course. Check with the airlines. There are usually extra fees associated with transporting a surfboard; for example, United charges $200 each way to transport a surfboard. Also, taxis will usually charge extra for transporting a surfboard. We will have plenty of boards to rent, but you’re more than welcome to bring your own along.
9. What is the climate like in Nicaragua?
San Juan del Sur is in the southwest corner of the country and sits very close to the Costa Rican border. The climate is tropical and humid. March is the middle of the dry season and San Juan del Sur has nearly constant off shore winds. The average daytime temp is approximately 81°F and nighttime temp averages 73°F.
10. What type of food will be served?
Healthy, mostly organic, locally sourced seasonal food will be served. Each meal will be different. Breakfast will range from fruit, yogurt and granola to chilaquiles to pancakes. Lunches will be lighter fare like falafel, salad, and fresh fruit. Dinners may consist of fresh, locally caught fish or locally raised chicken or beef. There will always be a vegetarian option available. Rice and beans are a Nicaraguan staple and may show up at multiple meals.
11. I have food allergies/dietary restrictions. Will I be accommodated?
Yes, we will do our best to make sure that you are fully satisfied with your meals. 17. Is there anything else to do other than yoga and surfing?
Yes, we are more than happy to help you arrange a day trip excursion during your stay in Nicaragua. We can help you book horseback riding, fishing, snorkeling, beach trips, a visit to La Flor, etc. through Gonzalo at Costa Dulce. The day trip to Laguna de Apoyo is always a great way to beat the heat. There is a turtle hatchery at La Flor. Last year we saw hundreds of baby turtles making their way to the sea.
18. Is Nicaragua safe?
Yes, it is. Like in most parts of the world it is important to make intelligent choices. Costa Dulce is incredibly safe and the staff is treated like family and they will treat you like family. Outside of Costa Dulce it is important to stay off of the beach after dark, to not take out more than you need at night, and to trust your instincts. If in doubt, ask a local/expat if it’s safe.
19. Do I need antimalarial meds?
This is a personal preference. The risk of contracting malaria in Nicaragua is low according to the CDC. All rooms at Costa Dulce are fully screened in and it is not necessary to sleep under a mosquito net. I do recommend bringing a good bug spray that you can use during the evenings.
20. Do I need travel insurance?
It is not required, but I do recommend it. Many policies will help cover theft, travel delays, and evacuation should you need it. It may also protect you in case of trip cancellation due to illness or death of a family member.
21. What happens if Ambuja Yoga cancels the retreat?
All money you have paid to Ambuja Yoga will be refunded within 30 days of retreat cancellation.

All foreign citizens need a passport to enter Nicaragua. Please make sure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months after the retreat.

Yes, you will want to bring extra spending money. Here are things you may need extra money for: an additional massage, private surf or yoga lesson, lunch on our beach/town day, alcoholic/nonalcoholic beverages on our beach/town day and at Laguna de Apoyo, souvenirs, snacks, sunscreen, bug spray, optional excursions ex. horseback riding, La Flor turtle trip, etc. We have included gratuity for hotel staff. You may want to bring gratuity for tour guides, masseuses, etc.
24. What type of wildlife will I see?
You may see howler monkeys, sloth, parrots, snakes, scorpions, stingrays and turtles. Costa Dulce Beach Bungalows is located next to a small wildlife preservation area.
